Grantmaking

We offer grants through an ongoing cycle. The funding amounts, grant terms, and application criteria vary by type. Our grantmaking will be aligned to our strategic priorities and focus areas, driving toward our goal of equitable economic mobility for Kansas Citians.


Grant opportunities

We offer Capacity Building, Collective Impact, Project, and Research grants on a regular grant cycle, as well as one-time Sunset grants.

Project Grant

Funding available:

At least $250,000, per year, multiyear

For organizations to design and implement, or scale a multiyear project that drives impact across our strategies.

Research Grant

Funding available:

At least $250,000 per year

For research projects that build deeper understanding of our focus areas, address gaps in our research, and translate research findings into practice.

Sunset Grant

Funding available:

Up to $100,000 (one-time)

For previous long-term grantees who no longer align with our funding priorities.

Capacity Building Grant

Funding available:

$100,000 – $250,000

For 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity organizations with a need to build their capacity in order to strengthen or scale impact in our focus areas.

Collective Impact Grant

Funding available (planning): Up to $500,000

Funding available (implementation): $5 million to $20 million over multiple years

A two-part grant for coalitions of high-capacity organizations to create a systems-change strategy to close economic mobility gaps in the Kansas City region.

Sunset grants are designed to provide one-time support for former grantees whose work no longer aligns with our strategic priorities and focus areas.

To receive Sunset funding, the organization must acknowledge the understanding that Sunset recipients will be ineligible to receive additional funding in alignment with our grantmaking guidelines until 2027.

The Kauffman Foundation is unable to provide funding for the following:
